The contentiousness of hats - to wear or not to wear - goes all the way back to the Bible, when Paul's first epistle to the Corinthians gave the following instructions: 'The head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man… Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. But every woman that prayeth… with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head… For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn.' Which might explain why there was such a fuss about Samantha Cameron appearing hatless at the royal wedding in Westminster Abbey; the resulting hullabaloo being the contemporary equivalent of public shearing, perhaps?
