Oscars 2013 beauty highlights

From Jessica Chastain and her signature red lipstick to Jennifer Lawrence and her pretty up-do, find out which Hollywood stars made waves with their beauty looks at the 2013 Oscars.

 Anne Hathaway continues to think pink, and ditches her signature red lipstick, for a, we think, far more flattering look on her pale rose complexion. Matched with her softer blow-out too, it just works.

 Ten out of tan on the richter scale, Heidi Klum hasn't even noticed it's February, or for that matter that it's 2013.

 Charlize Theron takes her Mad Max hair hangover and softens it with her failsafe girly ethereal sheeny, glowing make-up and gently lined eye.

 Taking the Oscar for Best Actress, Jennifer Lawrence has indeed found her beauty footing on the red carpet. Putting her best foot forward again, Lawrence worked her barely there base, balmy lips and grey blue eyes (with the help of a few extra lashes) and that super pretty up-do beautifully.

 Someone's been playing with colour. Kirsten Stewart mixes one too many shades with dolly cheeks, candy pink lips and a warm brown eye for her new rainbow red carpet look. A crazed and confused make-up look.

 Yes we've seen her with this look before, but Jessica Chastain knows that a bit of old fashioned glamour in the form of her favourite side swept hair and red lipstick is the recipe for red carpet success. Shame she hasn't mastered the false lash effect quite so well.

 Taking it back to the old school with her hair maybe, we still like the stonger brow and more gutsy, plum toned, lipstick on Nicole Kidman .

 A curl happy tong does not the modern hair-do make. But we'll give it to Reese Witherspoon for attempting to take on this year's red carpet favourite 1940's do. Just a little less effort next time.

Renée Zellweger asked her make-up artist for an "easy glamour look." So using Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser in Nude and Bronzing Powder in Matte Bronze, with a little Matte Eye Colour in Truffle and Eye Liner in Noir, Kristofer Buckle created this "sexy, pretty and fresh look." Shame Laura Mercier doesn't do hairspray really.

Oscars 2013: What should they wear?

This chic and simple Elie Saab gown would add just the right amount of age-appropriate glamour to 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis, and would sit well against her signature bright canine handbag.

Muted palettes seem to suit nominee for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Amy Adams . This ethereal number would see the starlet take a more pale and interesting turn down the red carpet. And as she's in favour with the fashion house (Adams wore Marchesa to the Globes) she should have no problem securing the gown over other wishful guests.

Anne Hathaway is a fan of the minimalist gown on the red carpet, but has also been seen modelling floral motifs, of late. This Badgley Mischka gown comprises both her favoured sleek silhouette and gives a nod to her current flirtation for pattern.

At 85 , Emmanuelle Riva is the oldest actress to ever be nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. This simple Chanel gown, with fun floral detailing, is the perfect cover-up for such a lady.

Naomi Watts in Oscar de la Renta
Naomi Watts tends to veer on the halter-neck or strapless side of the dress camp, but with milky white skin to show off this V-neck Oscar de la Renta gown would see the actress give a new flirty flourish to her red carpet fashion career.

It's practically unquestionable that Jennifer Lawrence, who has just starred in her first Miss Dior campaign, will wear a gown designed by Raf Simons. We think she'll celebrate her newly photographed role as Dior ambassador with a structured gown to accentuate her tiny waist. (And one with no nude panels, of course).

Oscars 2012: Red carpet fashion worst dressed

See whose outfits bombed on the red carpet at the biggest awards ceremony of the year: the 84th Academy Awards.

VIOLA DAVIS
Viola, is that you? It's like Jennifer Hudson at the Academy Awards last year - with a dodgy-hued and ill-fitting frock. The gown's designer might be Vera Wang, but that's not enough for Davis to make the best-dressed list.

ELLIE KEMPER
Someone should have made certain to tell Miss Kemper that matching your gown to your hair is not a prerequisite...

TINA FEY
Whilst there is nothing inherently wrong with Fey's Carolina Herrera gown, it is so safe it should carry a health warning. Come tomorrow, we won't even recall what she was wearing.

ANNA FARIS
Is it just us or does Faris look positively uncomfortable in this Diane von Furstenburg frock? Ill-fitting in style, this pairing was doomed from the start.

KELLY RIPA
Hmm...what colour is TV presenter Kelly Rippa's dress supposed to be? And why does it have two belts? We're perplexed...

WENDI MURDOCH
As if her chest were a set of crown jewels, Murdoch's dress acts like a silky curtain which reveals her, erm, prized assets. As if that wasn't enough, she reached for a pair of spangly purple earrings and a pink bag to complete her already fussy look.

SARAH HYLAND
Hyland is only 21, but it feels like she plumped for a dress ideal for someone double her age. Where is the embellishment and the drama? This Alberta Ferretti frock has left us - and Hyland, feeling flat.

BUSY PHILIPPS
We kind of feel like Miss Philipps wasn't actually 'busy' enough in her approach to getting dressed for the big event. This grey lacy gown screams cocktail party rather than Oscars, and sadly those earrings are doing nothing for us, either.

JUDY GREER
Greer only makes it on this list because as much as we love her sequin-embellished column gown, the athletic neckline makes it that little bit too sporty for 'the' red carpet event of the year.

ANN SOPHIE BION
Erm, if there's one thing you absolutely shouldn't be wearing to the Oscars, it's a bin liner fashioned into a dress. We're all for eco-chic, but this is rubbish (excuse the pun…).

PENELOPE ANN MILLER
American actress Miller co-designed her gown with New York Fashion Week label Badgley Mischka, but we're not convinced. The neckline looks ever so sarong-like, and the rest is just that bit too body-conscious.

MISSI PYLE
Pyle's dress looks like an exercise in the appreciation of draping - that, or like there was some highly-flammable chiffon hanging around and just desperate to have an outing at the Oscars.

VIRGINIA MADSEN
Eeek, it's like the 1980s all over again. Those iridescent purples just give us the creeps, sorry.

DAVID AND VICTORIA BECKHAM
David looks eerily like a cardboard-cutout but what a great background he makes to Victoria's stone-coloured strapless creation. Not a huge fan of the belt, but get a load of that bauble on her finger!

CAROLINA HERRERA
Carolina looks effortlessly regal in one of her own feathered designs, accessorised with gob-stopper-sized emeralds.

CLAIRE DANES
Wowza! Claire Danes' hot pink Valentino gown is a bit Barbie from the waist-down, but the sheer chest-detail redeems the chiffon explosion.

ELIZABETH OLSEN
Tipped as one to watch in the style stakes, baby Olsen doesn't disappoint in a chic black Christian Dior gown with alternating ruffled and sheer panels, and a clutch by her sisters' line, The Row.

DIANE KRUGER
On first glance a restrained effort from Kruger in her favourite Calvin Klein, until you look more closely and realise her neckline incorporates a red lacy bra. Is it all a bit Essex, with the Croydon face-lift hair? We're still undecided.

TOM FORD
Top marks for Tom in his blue velvet smoking jacket which looks so suave it makes us come over all faint.

TOM CRUISE AND KATIE HOLMES
Tom-Kat look like the cats that got the cream, with every reason. Katie's floor-sweeping midnight blue Elie Saab gown is twinkling in all the right places, and Tom's satin lapels add a natty edge.

MARIO TESTINO
The Peruvian fashion photographer won't give up the day job, even on Oscars night.

ZOE SALDANA
Earning her fashion stripes in autumn/winter 2012 Marios Schwab (he only showed last week), Zoe does equal parts sweet and sexy in a sheer-skirted gown with a dash of red lipstick thrown in for good measure.

SERENA WILLIAMS
Is Serena's seemingly inflatable, fish-tailed, tennis-ball-coloured gown a homage to her obvious skills on the court? Or has she taken one too many balls to the head?

SOFIA COPPOLA
Taking the jumpsuit to the next level, eternally chic film director Sofia scores a home run with double cuffs and a matching belt. Sounds hideous when you put it like that, but the picture does her justice.

VERA WANG
The former figure skater and queen of bridal dressing looks positively blooming at the grand old age of 62, wearing a dress of her own design from her spring/summer 2012 collection.

CAMERON DIAZ
Diaz's hair has returned to its There's Something About Mary glory days, thankfully minus Ben Stiller's 'hair gel', to let this tangerine Victoria Beckham gown do all the talking. Could anyone else look this good in pumpkin?

A masterclass in practical Oscars dressing: Gwyneth is still wearing her knock-out Tom Ford gown from the ceremony, but has shed the cape for the afterparty. Way to save on the old dry-cleaning bill!

Looking like a style siren if ever there was one, January goes retro in a Wes Gordon autumn/winter 2012 emerald satin halterneck dress with a leather detailing.
