CALVIN KLEIN
Fashion designer Calvin Klein in 1989, when his eponymous label was facing financial difficulties. Now aged 69, he was rumoured to be dating a form porn star who was only a third of his age.

JOHN GALLIANO
John Galliano has adopted many guises during his design career (which came to a halt last year following an anti-Semitic rant in a Paris Café). From astronaut to bleached blonde dreadlocks, the image on the left shows Galliano in 1988.

ALBER ELBAZ
Lanvin creative director Alber Elbaz has got geek chic down to an art. The Moroccan-born designer's bespectacled look from 1998 has merely evolved into a more modern version for 2012.

The top 20 models of 2011 - 1

Karlie Kloss, Stella Tennant and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have all enjoyed a year in the spotlight, but who else made our top 20?

Arizona Muse
There was no escaping Arizona Muse's bushy brows and heart-shaped face this year, be it from a billboard modelling for high street giant Next, or a Louis Vuitton ad campaign. The mother-of-one, who hails from New Mexico, has fast become the fashion editor's model of choice, clocking up editorials in the American, Russian, Australian and French editions of Vogue - to name but a few.

Lara Stone
Ranked by models.com as their top model, 2011 has proved to be another work-filled year for Dutch-born Stone, with over 12 glossy covers and campaigns for Calvin Klein, Tom Ford and Prada Perfume.

Freja Beja Erickson
Countless catwalk appearances coupled with campaigns for Chanel, Louis Vuitton, H&M and Valentino has left Freja one of the most in-demand models of the moment (not to mention the ever-increasing Vogue covers).

Daphne Groeneveld
One of the breakout new faces of the year, Dutch Daphne walked 48 runway shows for spring/summer 2012 alone. She has also covered V magazine and Love Magazine and was picked to star in the Versace for H&M campaign.

Cara Delevingne
19-year old Cara has come in to her own this year. Continuing her role as the face of Burberry, the bushy-browed Londoner took to the catwalk to open and close the Prorsum spring/summer 2012 show with gusto.

Gisele Bundchen
Still regarded as the highest earning and most powerful supermodel (she earned over $45 million last year) Gisele enjoyed cover appearances on 13 glossy covers this year. And the work keeps pouring in: Versace, Givenchy and Salvatore Ferragamo have all picked her to front their spring/summer 2012 campaigns.

Karlie Kloss
After clocking up numerous editorials, ad campaigns and catwalk appearances, Kloss recently hit the big time: she was chosen to walk in the Victoria's Secret show in November. Shortly after, the 19-year-old was photographed by Steven Miesel for Vogue Italia, in what is a soon-to-be-iconic editorial, proclaiming her the new 'Body'.

Kelly Mittendorf
The face of Prada's autumn/winter 2011 campaign has put newcomer Kelly firmly on the radar. With her feline eyes and strong jaw, she's defintely one to watch.

Lindsey Wixson
Wixson's bee stung lips and full cheeks make her face unmistakeable. A catwalk favourite, she too starred in the Versace for H&M campaign, all while remaining a sweet, modest girl from Kansas, USA.

Stella Tennant
Tennant's 40th year proved to be a winning one: after gracing the cover of Italian Vogue and appearing in autumn campaigns for Zara, Etro and Reed Krakoff, the Scottish-born mother of four was crowned Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards.

If there's anyone who knows a thing or two about being sexy, it's half-Dutch, half-British model Lara Stone. The 26-year-old, who bears a distinctive gap-toothed grin and a cup-size not commonly associated with a catwalk model, is so in-demand that former Vogue Paris editor Carine Roitfeld thought she was so sexy she dedicated a whole issue of the magazine to her, while Calvin Klein signed her up to model for them exclusively.

What to buy in the sales

Make sure your summer sale purchases don't leave you looking 'so last season' when autumn arrives with our guide to the spring/summer trends that will continue through to autumn/winter.

Sleeveless Jacket
A hybrid between a blazer and a gilet, the sleeveless jacket is the must-have garment for the winter. The style was first showcased at the spring/summer shows by the likes of Alexander Wang (left) however it has been layered with trousers or worn on its own, as seen at Dolce & Gabbana (right), for a tougher autumn/winter look.

Tunic and Trousers
If the idea of a dress over trousers conjures up ideas of 90's nightmares, think again. The tunic and trousers combo was sleek and chic at spring/summer Calvin Klein (left) and the minimalist vison rolled into autumn/winter where if featured on the Osman, Giorgio Armani and Peter Pilotto (right) catwalks.

Androgynous
The boy-meets-girl look has been creeping onto the womenswear runways over the last few seasons, with Teddy Boys dominating the Balenciaga spring/summer 2011 show (left). Men's tailoring - both laid back and more traditional - was rife on the autumn/winter catwalks, as seen at Paul Smith (right).

Blue
Blue made a serious splash on the spring/summer catwalks. Whether it was a royal hue or futher towards turquoise, blue was the colour du jour, as seen at Miu Miu (left). For autumn/winter blue continues to dominate, but this time in more jewel like tones at Roksanda Ilincic (right).

Floral
On the spring/summer catwalks floral prints ranged from the dainty and pretty as seen at Erdem (left) to the dramatic at Dries van Noten. In autumn/winter flowers were everywhere - from decorating the sleeves at Miu Miu to dominating the capes at Jil Sander (right).

Monochromatic
Black and white is a colour combination which isn't new to any catwalk. Keep it crisp as shown at both spring/summer Pringle of Scotland (left) and autumn/winter Burberry (right) and you'll be on to a winner.

Nude
Nude is a trend that has been around for seasons. It all started with 'camel' which took over the autumn/winter catwalks last year. For spring/summer it was translated into a softer 'nude' with a strong empahsis on the ballet, particularly at Chloe (left). For autumn/winter there is a pinky hue to the oh-so-wearable nude and a strong emphasis on seperates, exemplied by Michael Kors (right).

Pencil Skirts
Perhaps since Mad Men hit our screens, the revival of the pencil skirt has been inevitable. Featuring in numerous spring/summer shows including Emporio Armani (left) the skirt could be considered a staple- rather than statement-piece. This season, the pencil skirt has become the star of the show and comes with embellishment, splits and prints as seen at Jonathan Saunders (right).

Sheer
The sheer trend from spring/summer has been picked up both on the high-street and on the red carpet. However, the look gets a mini-makeover as it goes into autumn/winter. Gone is the all out sheer as seen at Richard Nicholl (left) and instead designers are bring in sheer peek-a-boo panels for a sexier edge, as seen at Stella McCartney (right), Versus and Louis Vuitton.

THE '70s
The Studio 54 vibe was everywhere for spring/summer 2011, most notably at Marc Jacobs (left), who showed a set of disco diva dresses to clear the dancefloor - Bianca Jagger eat your heart out! The '70s is back for autumn/winter with Gucci (right) picking up the baton with a range of ethereal gowns inspired by Frida Giannnini's muse of the moment: Florence Welch.

In pictures: models turned actresses

Liz Hurley landed a plump role as spokesmodel for Estée Lauder in 1995, such was the power of "that" dress - she had no prior modelling experience. She tried her hand at acting in 1999 as a spy in the hit "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me". That would prove to be her acting highpoint; in 2000, she starred in "Bedazzled" as the devil who granted Brendan Fraser seven wishes, one of which should have been: "Burn this film from movie history, please."

A big-name model in the Eighties, Andie MacDowell appeared in ad campaigns for Yves Saint Laurent and Armani. She turned to acting in the late Eighties, after taking classes at the Actors Studio. Her star rose in the early Nineties after the success of "Groundhog Day", but it was her turn in "Four Weddings and a Funeral" with Hugh Grant for which she is remembered. The 1994 film became the highest-grossing British film at the time, taking $245.7 million at the box office, and earned a nomination at the Oscars for Best Picture. The 53-year-old has been less prolific on the big screen since, with roles mostly in television.

Agyness Deyn is dipping her toes into the acting world in new film 'Pusher'; which other models have turned actresses over the years?

Cameron Diaz, 38, began her career with Elite Model Management, landing campaigns with Calvin Klein and Levi's. Her breakthrough, though, came in 1994, with the film, "The Mask". The comedy made stars out of its leads, Jim Carrey, and Diaz, who was awarded the part of Tina Carlyle, despite having no previous acting experience. The sunny Californian native has never looked back, with a diverse CV that covers everything from comedies ("There's Something About Mary") to period pieces ("Gangs of New York") and animation (the "Shrek" films).

Halle Berry regularly tops the lists of the world's most beautiful women these days, but the Ohio-born star's beauty has been celebrated since her youth; she won the Miss Teen All-American Pageant in 1985. The 44-year-old actress dabbled with modelling, but acting called early on when she landed a role in the television series, "Living Dolls" in 1989. Things didn't take off instantly, though - her most memorable role in the Nineties was the dire "The Flintstones". However, she proved she was more than just eye candy in 1998's "Bulworth", portraying a street-smart young woman who takes up with a struggling politician, but it was "Monster's Ball" which cemented her status. That role earned her the Oscar for Best Actress in 2001, the first African-American actress to win the accolade. Then "Catwoman" happened...

Born Mary Laurence Hutton in 1943, Lauren Hutton started ger career with Ford Modelling Agency, notching up countless covers for "Vogue". She was also the original "Charlie" girl. Her debut in acting came in 1968, when she was selected to play the only major female character in "Paper Lion". She starred opposite Richard Gere in "American Gigolo" in 1980, but good roles were few and far between thereafter. Nowadays, she continues to juggle modelling and film duties: she walked in Tom Ford's comeback show last September and starred in "The Joneses" with Demi Moore and David Duchovny in 2009.
