Kate Moss has done it for years. Recently, the Duchess of Cambridge has been doing it too. Yet only very few women possess that particular combination of public profile and personal style that inspires other women to buy their clothes.

Trying to work out which women truly have that knack is tricky. When trumpeting a sudden rush of purchases of an item worn by a well-known somebody, companies will only describe sales increases in impressive-sounding percentages rather than potentially measly units sold. There is so much hoo-ha about the Duchess that at least some of it (see below) must be trumped up.
But for some designers a piece from their collection on the right person really can make a difference. Rupert Sanderson, the shoe designer, is still basking in the new business generated by the Duchess when she wore his grey suede Malone courts this month. He said: "The wonderful thing is that whatever these very special women wear, we sell out of."

She pops into Topshop and queues for her purchases, she buys her clothes in the sales (or even at Bicester Village) and, this week, she appeared to have borrowed the same blue Trina Reiss dress her mother first wore two years ago. Furthermore, her taste is classical, demure - and supremely safe. Yet to the chagrin of some in fashion, The Duchess of Cambridge has in the last year often proved to be genuine consumer catnip. Items that have sold out within days of her being photographed wearing them include a £325 jacquard Orla Kiely print dress in which she visited a primary school in Oxford, and a £69.99 Zara dress worn to the Royal Albert Hall last December.
Yet the side-effect of "The Kate Effect" is that some retailers cheekily attempt to co-opt it for themselves.
Last year, after the Duchess wore a Burberry trenchcoat (that model sold out nationwide within 24 hours) on a visit to Belfast, Asda informed the world that sales of a similar, £22 design in its George range had since tripled. The pictures last week of the Duchess playing hockey with the Team GB squad in a pair of coral-toned skinny jeans prompted a speedy release - from Asda again - claiming a resulting 88 per cent spike in its sales of similar trousers just a day later. Hmmm.

The Queen wore a pale blue outfit with a matching hat; Camilla was dressed in a navy blue coat with eye-catching white horizontal stripes at the top, while Kate, the newest addition to the Royal Family, wore a blue wool above-the-knee coat.
So far, so safe. But in fact, Kate's outfit broke from tradition in one subtle way. The Duchess, who almost exclusively wears British-based labels chose a coat by M Missoni, the second line of Italian fashion house Missoni. Six students at De Montfort University are competing to design a pair of shoes for the Duchess of Cambridge to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
A group of fashion students are putting their best foot forward as they aim to design a pair of dream shoes for the Duchess of Cambridge.
The six excited students on the Footwear Design degree at De Montfort University (DMU) will meet Kate next week when she visits the campus with the Queen to mark the beginning of the Diamond Jubilee Tour of the UK.
Kate will view designs by Sam Sawkill, Summer Spencer, Kay Yeng Cheng, Tabitha Duffield, Becka Hunt and Mei Chun Lai and decide which she likes best.
The lucky winner will then make up a pair of the shoes for the Duchess, and see the shoes they have designed and created worn by the future Queen.
The winning design will afford the successful student, who was shortlisted by lecturers at DMU from more than 100 applicants, a "magnificent opportunity", Professor Dominic Shellard, vice-chancellor of De Montfort University, said.

According to the title's panel of judges, chaired by editor Lucy Yeomans, the Duchess won first place because her "incredible style evolution has gripped us all."

The Duchess of Cambridge stayed true to her democratic high street fashion policy when she met America's First Lady at Buckingham Palace today. She chose 'Shola', a pale camel bandage dress by Reiss, one of her favourite fashion destinations, costing £175. Reiss have confirmed that the dress is still available in their stores and on their website, although the website has currently crashed due to a huge spike in traffic as a result of the Duchess's patronage.

Its exquisite hand-embroidered and appliquéd lace, and emphasis on 'best of British' materials, recalled Queen Victoria's decision in 1840 that her bridal gown should promote the nation's skills, while the classic and graceful lines could have been inspired by both the modernist Princess Margaret, who in 1960 also married in Westminster Abbey, and the more romantic style of Princess Grace, whose wedding had taken place four years earlier. The latter reference could be also be seen as a very sensitive and sympathetic homage to Diana, Princess of Wales, who had had an instant rapport with the former Hollywood film star and saw her as a style icon.
When Catherine Middleton stepped out of the vintage Rolls Royce Phantom, she stepped straight the pages of fashion history, finally revealing her wedding dress to a waiting world audience, estimated at around two billion people. She carried a small bouquet of flowers which bore a secret love message to her future husband.
The wedding dress was a model of sumptuous simplicity, perfectly suited to the sweet and serene style of the woman who is now Duchess of Cambridge and is destined to be the future Queen of England.

The design was fabulous, fashionable and fairytale, perfectly in tune with Ms Middleton's desire that it should combine tradition and modernity with the artistic vision that characterises Britain's most famous fashion label, established by the late Lee Alexander McQueen, in 1994.
It featured a strapless,Victorian-style corset, narrowed at the waist and padded at the hips - long a signature of the late couturier - underneath a high-necked, long-sleeved, sculpted bodice in intricate lacework, handmade by the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace, and incorporating individual, hand-cut and embroidered flowers representing the rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock. The English Cluny lace was handworked in the Carrickmacross tradition, which originated in Ireland in the 1820's, and was mixed with French Chantilly lace.
