JOHN GALLIANO
John Galliano has adopted many guises during his design career (which came to a halt last year following an anti-Semitic rant in a Paris Café). From astronaut to bleached blonde dreadlocks, the image on the left shows Galliano in 1988.

ALBER ELBAZ
Lanvin creative director Alber Elbaz has got geek chic down to an art. The Moroccan-born designer's bespectacled look from 1998 has merely evolved into a more modern version for 2012.

Milan Fashion Week: Just Cavalli autumn/winter 2012

Hot-to-trot raver supervixens - proceed directly to Just Cavalli.

Roberto Cavalli says it would take an "indecent proposal" - something in the region of a billion euros - to make him even contemplate selling his company.

This is fitting enough, because gleeful, borderline indecency is Cavalli's stock-in-trade. Sometimes it segues perfectly with the mood of fashion, and sometimes it doesn't. Right now, perhaps, it doesn't: but Cavalli stuck to his guns in this new collection for his recently-reclaimed-from-licencees Just Cavalli diffusion range.

The backing set was very warehouse rave: a grimy, graffiti splattered, paint-curled stairwell. These ravers though were more Rimini than Park Royal, chicly-kohled party girls in chiffon wisps of zebra print, leopard print, and a magnified, pixellated houndstooth.
Green and rust lurex skintight trousers over tails-still-attached furs, shimmering shift dresses peppered with golden sequins and toothpaste-tube-tight printed dark denims were a few more podium-ready looks.
The shoes were outrageous: pink-soled (eat that Louboutin) gold-or-silver shoe boots with silver panels at the toe and heel. There was a (flat-soled) version for the men too, as well as an only-for-the-brave flared to the ankle suit. Cavalli is the party - and if this is the particular type of party you're after, then dive right in.

Modelling veteran Naomi Campbell closes Roberto Cavalli's autumn/winter 2012 show.

The Artist' s success at the Academy Awards inspired Roberto Cavalli to hand out a prize of his own in Milan today.
Wearing black elbow gloves and a floor-length, purplish beaded dress with a steep V-neckline, the 41-year-old stalked her way way around Cavalli's catwalk with the all aplomb of a 25-year-veteran.
She too had The Artist on her mind when she said backstage that modelling "is, in a way, like silent acting. I want to wear the dress and whatever it is that I'm wearing, show it in the best possible way."
Cavalli recalled Campbell modelling at his second ever show. "She was very wild. Much wilder than today! And every dress you put on her, she knows how to interpret it - she is an actress of fashion."

For spring/summer denim took on a grown up feel making it a wardrobe staple, but for the winter season it is leather that is the must-have.

Fur was seen on almost every autumn/winter catwalk, replacing the fringing trend which covered every surface in the collections earlier in year.

IN: Checks, as seen at MaxMara, Rag & Bone and Thakoon autumn/winter 2011.
Checks came in all shapes and sizes, be they tartan, houndstooth or Maasai inspired, for autumn/winter.

IN: Hats, as seen at Lanvin, Hermes and Moschino autumn/winter 2011.
The whymsical gypsy girl from the spring/summer season was nowhere to be seen on the autumn/winter catwalks. Instead hats came down the runways in all shapes and sizes.

IN : Slick ponytails, as seen at Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs and Christopher Kane autumn/winter 2011.
Put away your crimpers and go for the slicked back look with this season's ponytail. Perhaps the easiest - and least expensive - of the trends to master!

IN: Twiggy, as seen at Burberry, Prada and Bottega Veneta autumn/winter 2011.
Flouncy disco inspired clothes may have had their last dance, and are promptly being replaced by graphic, 60's shifts.

IN : Tunic and trousers, as seen at Diane von Furtenburg, Michael Kors and Osman autumn/winter 2011.
Longline tunic tops, paired with trousers is the new approach to evening wear, so store away your maxis in the coming months.

A high shine opulence gave the nude trend a glamourous gold reinvention.

The winter months normally see a greater number of darker clothes, however this season many of the designers went fully back to black.

IN: Snakeskin, as seen at Gucci, Chloe and Prada autumn/winter 2011.
Keeping it on the wild side, designers have replaced the swathes of zebra print with coloured snakeskin, be it as a detail on accessories or a head-to-toe look.
