Milan Fashion Week: Gucci autumn/winter 2012

With specialists predicting Milan's sales are to nosedive this year, Frida Giannini delivers a dark but still glamorous collection for Gucci.

 This is set to be a gloomy year for Italian fashion - analysts suggest sales will decline by 5.2 per cent in 2012 - and Gucci's opening show today captured that mood perfectly.

New season fashion muses

Bianca Jagger is SO last season. From Bettie Page to David Bowie, find out who inspired the autumn/winter 2011 collections.

 The colourful printed costumes of the Ballet Russes were a source of inspiration for Mary Katrantzou (pictured) and Dries van Noten.

 Pictures of the 50's pin-up Bettie Page adorned the front of sweatshirts at the Givenchy show.

Twiggy's mod style was seen on many-a-catwalk, particularly in the graphic shift dresses at Prada.

 David Bowie's early image was cited as one of the icons behind the Gucci collection.

 Fetishistic garments in black leather were rife on in autumn/winter collections, carrying a hint of Catwoman.

 With polka-dots being a key trend for autumn/winter, the Tophop Unique show was clearly channeling Cruella de Vil.

 Red lamé and thigh high splits at Antonio Berardi gave a nod towards the oh-so-sexy Jessica Rabbit.

 

 The models at Miu Miu - with their 40's tea dresses and victory rolls - looked like they had just stepped out of a Katharine Hepburn film.

 British fashion designer and style icon Mary Quant, is a figure to take inspiration from when experimenting with the 'tunic and trousers' trend and shift dresses, as seen at Alberta Ferretti.

 Marc Jacobs made direct reference to the 1974 film The Night Porter with his Louis Vuitton collection.

 Patti Smith's teddy-boy image cropped up time and time again on the autumn/winter catwalks, most notably at Dolce & Gabbana.

The inaugural Gucci award for Women in Cinema nominees are announced

Gucci announced the nominees for its first 'Women in Cinema' award, in collaboration with the Venice Film Festival.

Celebrating outstanding artistic achievement by a woman in film-making, the nominees have been selected from all walks of the film industry, from acting, directing or producing, to set and costume designing and editing, and were chosen by a jury including Gucci's creative director, Frida Giannini, and actors Robin Wright and James Franco, amongst others.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony during a private dinner hosted by Giannini on September 2, when Gucci will make a grant of $25,000 to the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at NYU Tisch School of the Arts in the recipients name.

Rihanna Models For Gucci and UNICEF

Stylish singer, Rihanna, has been selected to model in Gucci's 4th annual ad campaign for UNICEF. The singer is posed wearing Gucci's all white Tattoo Heart collection. A portion of the proceeds from this collection will go to the UNICEF to help support children living in Africa.

The ads arn't due out until December, but here is a sneak peak.

Clair Danes For Gucci

Claire Danes has replaced Drew Barrymore as the face for Gucci's fine jewelry ad campaigns. The ads were shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.



Gucci creative director says, "Claire Danes is a modern icon and one of the most interesting young actresses on the international scene. Claire’s sensual, confident beauty and her passionate, independent and strong character embodies today’s Gucci woman."

Bid On Geri Halliwell's Gucci Dress

Former Spice Girl, Geri Halliwell, has put her black Gucci dress that she wore to host the 2006 Breast Cancer Care Annual Fashion Show. The dress is part of the 27 dresses celebrity dress auction where all the proceeds go to the Lavender Trust to help younger women suffering from breast cancer. The bidding stops on March 10th.

Madonna Hosts Fundraiser For Children In Africa

Madonna hosted the "A Night to Benefit Raising Malawi and UNICEF" fundraiser in New York City on Wednesday night. The event was co-hosted by Gucci and took place in a tent on the lawns of the United Nations. Many celebs took a night off from New York Fashion Week to show their support and raise funds for orphans and children suffering from HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Rihanna performed at the event wearing a green halter dress.

Salma Hayek wore a beautiful black gown to show off her figure after just giving birth to a daughter 5 months prior to the event.

Jessica Alba In Elle Magazine

Jessica Alba has been the focus of a lot of the news lately with her recent engagement, pregnancy, fashion sense, and acting career. Its no wonder Elle magazine would want her as the February cover model and story for Valentines month.

Kate Hudson Rocks the Red Carpet

The Movies Rock event at the Kodak Theatre earlier this week was an IT spot for celebrities wearing amazing designer fashion.

Kate Hudson was the one to look out for, wearing her spring 2008 Gucci, black, strapless mini dress. Kate matched the dress with opaque tights and black patent pumps. Kate's accessories made the outfit, she wore a Frank Gehry collection bracelet from Tiffany's and carried a bright red envelope clutch with matching red nail polish.

The small splash of red is something to add to your own holiday dresses this season. Look for small clutches in bright colours to match with your monochrome look.
