Some poor fillies faced the dreaded Human Meat Barrier as they were turned away by bouncers at a party in Cannes this week. Their folly? Attempting to penetrate the Palais in humble slacks, which, in the festival of flesh-aplenty, is worse than rocking up with leprosy. No wonder Cheryl Cole binned the purple trousers and got her baps out; that plunging white dress was probably a tactical move to appease the meanies on the door and save her from a(nother) nightclub spar trying to get in.
The door Gestapo's subtext is that covered-up isn't sexy enough for an event that's all about the sexy. Frankly, though, I say screw that view of sexy and bring on the subdued - slacks, blazers, shirts
et al . Much more refreshing, plus, any any chance to rebel against the status quo, I take with relish and a side of up yours.
Through the fug of froth and sequins, I spied the sharp tonic that was Eva Herzigova. Ditching the saccharine, she picked a sleek black tuxedo by Dolce & Gabbana, although she substituted the trousers for shorts.
Fancy shorts for evening have been hovering on the periphery for a couple of seasons, but the appeal now - and the thrill of Herzigova's - is its slick way with a matching jacket. Hence forth, it shall now be known as the "shorts suit", evening attire of choice for the more creative vets of the crimson walkway: Alexa Chung, Chloë Sevigny and Kate Bosworth.
Skin-concealing without being fusty (it shows leg, but is balanced by a respectable top half) and edgy without being silly, the shorts suit triumphs because it's sexy without pandering to that boring ass-and-boobs cliché.
