What a difference a decade makes: take a look back at what the fashion world's biggest players used to look like...

KARL LAGERFELD
German designer Karl Lagerfeld lost 100lbs in just ober a year back in 2001. "I suddenly wanted to dress differently, to wear clothes designed by Hedi Slimane," he said at the time. "But these fashions, modeled by very, very slim boys-and not men my age-required me to lose at least 40 kg. It took me exactly thirteen months." He has kept his slim frame ever since.

MARC JACOBS
Marc Jacobs was the epitome of the grungy collections he produces in the 90s. Following several stints in rehab, Jacobs is fit and toned at 49.

MATTHEW WILLIAMSON
British designer Matthew Williamson has barely changed over the last fifteen years or so, only adding some facial embellishments to his look.

STELLA MCCARTNEY
Announced as French fashion house Chloe's new recruit in 1997, McCartney was just 26 years old. Now aged 40, she has build on her internationally successful eponymous label for over a decade.

TOM FORD
Ford is one of those gentlemen who becomes even more handsome with age. From his fresh-faced years at Gucci in the Nineties, he has since matured with some artfully grown stubble as he enters his sixth decade.

TOMMY HILFIGER
American sportswear designer Tommy Hilfiger has carved out a billion-dollar fashion empire over four decades, all while keeping his teeth extra pearly-white.

DAME VIVIENNE WESTWOOD
Westwood grew from young eccentric, to erm, old eccentric. Her hairstyles from 1987 to present day might have changed numerous times over, but that smile is all hers.

GIORGIO ARMANI
Still taking a post-catwalk show bow aged 77, take a look at Mr Armani in the early Eighties.

Celebrity red carpet transformations

It's amazing what a couple of hours in hair and make-up can do for these normally low maintenance stars.

AGYNESS DEYN
Queen of East End casual with her bleached crop, baggy T-shirt and range of Dr. Martens boots, Agyness Deyn isn't what you'd call Hollywood glamorous, but slick back the hair and add a few Marc Jacobs accessories and her modelling glamour is restored.

CAREY MULLIGAN
Recently married Brit actress Carey Mulligan can best be described as hobo-chic in her spare time, but as soon as there's a red carpet in sight Miu Miu, Prada and Chanel are the order of the day.

Chanelling chimney sweep-chic Kiera's grey wardrobe staples are lacklustre at best for this night out in London. But add a dash of gold Valentino and a sweep of professional make-up and hey presto! a red carpet star is born.

SARAH JESSICA PARKER
Oft seen plodding around New York's Soho in her Ugg boots, a puffer jacket, sunglasses and a borderline rasta-style hat, with one or two of her brood hanging off her arm, Sarah Jessica Parker adds a sprinkling of Carrie Bradshaw glamour to her wardrobe when there's a glittering event in town.

Trending: buttoning up in pics

 Christopher Kane's autumn/winter 2011 collection saw plastic collars filled up with gel.

 Ashish's autumn/winter collection featured sequined pyjama shirts buttoned up with punky holed knitwear.

 Carven's Resort 2012 collection was also littered with collars on dungaree dresses and long line blouses.

 Also from the Resort collections, Celine's buttoned up shirts were in loud floral prints

 Dolce & Gabbana's andogynous 'teddy boy' collection was teeming with buttoned up collars to achieve that rockabilly look.

 14-year-old fashion maven and face of Miu Miu, Haillee Steinfeld wears a shift with an embellished pearl collar.

 The buttoned up collar is showing no signs of abating with regular appearances in the resort 2012 collections as well. Going for the statement collar once again, Kane's Resort collection saw clothes adorned with silver.

 Kirsten Dunst teams her buttoned up shirt with a metallic tuxedo and slick hair to achieve that androgynous style.

 Adding a sweet twist to Marc Jacob's sexy bondage-inspired collection for Louis Vuitton, Naomi Campbell models a white peter pan collar on a tight leather jacket.

 Miu Miu's autumn/winter 2011 collection drew on the 1940s for inspiration with double collars and broad-shouldered tailoring.

Pixie Lott looks demure in a monochrome collared blouse.

Hard edged latex and leather have replaced the soft, flowing sheer fabrics seen at the spring/summer collections.

Pailettes were the adornment of choice for many designers this year leaving very little room for other fine details such as pleating.

Somalian supermodel Iman showed off her statuesque frame in this sequinned all-in-one by Stella McCartney at the Met Ball, proving that lashings of sequins and a deep neckline can be just as glamorous as a gown.

Actress Katie Holmes exudes a quiet, less-is-more glamour on the front row at Milan Fashion Week.

Marc Jacobs nailed two trends in one when he designed this playful jumpsuit with thick, bold stripes for his Marc by Marc line.

Teen actress Abigail Breslin, 15, is definitely not old enough to recall jumpsuits the first time round, but that hasn't put her off experimenting with a contrasting style for the Tribeca Film Festival.

LONG GOWNS
Perfect poolside gowns, complete with flower-embellished hair, was the vibe at Marc Jacobs.

British singer Florence Welch is a Seventies style maven, displaying a penchant for long, bell-sleeved gowns in fine silk. For the recent Met Ball, she went for a Studio 54 look in a design by Stefano Pilati for Yves Saint Laurent.

FLARES
Flared jeans have quickly been adopted by celebrities keen to shed their skinnies. Actress Zoe Saldana got in the bell-bottomed grove with this stonewash pair, artfully teamed with a breezy, peach blouse.

Supermodel Claudia Schiffer has become the ultimate style inspiration for how to wear flares. Staying faithful to her beloved MiH 'Marrakesh' style, she whips up school-run ready looks with gingham shirts and mannish blazers that see her stylishly through to the end of the day.

Like she'd just stepped out of a Charlie's Angels film set, model Elle Macpherson went for a full-on throwback look to drop her children off at school.

For his eponymous label, Marc Jacobs took a trip down memory lane, and recreated the seventies in hot colours.

With a palette of mustard, brown and burnt orange, the Etro show payed homage to the staples from the Seventies, and that means jumpsuits aplenty.

JUMPSUITS
There's no easier way to ride the crest of a Seventies wave than with a jumpsuit. German supermodel Heidi Klum dipped a toe in the trend with this high-neck, earthy-toned all-in-one to a recent red carpet event.

Victoria Beckham Attends NY Fashion Week

Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham, took some time away from her busy schedule of touring with the Spice Girls to catch a few shows at New York Fashion Week. The British trend setter and fashionista was spotted at the Marc Jacobs fall 2008 show, where the models were wraped in silk and flannel. The Marc Jacobs models strutted down the runway to live music from Sonic Youth, with stars like Posh, Selma Blair, and Ellen Pompeo watching from the front row.

Beckham was also spotted at the Project Runway Season 4 fashion show. Posh was sitting with designer, Michael Kors and model, Heidi Klum. Victoria Beckham was an honorary judge for the popular show along with the regular crew.
