HIT: AISHWARYA RAI
Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai adds some molten glamour to proceedings in this strapless column gown.

HIT: ANNETTE BENING IN NAEEM KHAN
Bening put a fashionable foot forward in this sparkling column dress, showing how at 52 years old, there's no need to resort to cheap tricks to dazzle.

MISS: CAMILA ALVES IN KAUFMAN FRANCO
Perhaps Camila Alves literally had one of those 'OMG, I've got absolutely nothing to wear' moments, and so settled for a pair of her curtains at the last minute instead...

HIT: CELINE DION IN ARMANI PRIVÉ
Dion continued the dresses with sleeves micro-trend witnessed at the Golden Globes in this elegant Armani Privé gown. Extra points go in marvel at the fact that the singing sensation gave birth to twins four months ago.. the mind boggles.

HIT: HELENA BONHAM CARTER IN COLLEEN ATWOOD
It feels like B-C's really gone and played it safe in this bespoke creation, which she collaborated on with costume designer Colleen Atwood, saying: "I thought it would be nice to celebrate film rather than fashion. I have a complex with my bum, so I thought I would make it even bigger." However the Union jack garter ensured her rebellious nature stayed true.

HIT: HELEN MIRREN IN VIVIENNE WESTWOOD
Well, we'd be looking as pleased with ourselves if we looked as good as Dame Helen does. The veteran actress flew the flag for British fashion in a sleeved Vivienne Westwood gown, adding a continental twist with Cartier diamonds.

MISS: JENNIFER HUSDON IN ATELIER VERSACE
Hudson looked stunning in red, but the 'booby' halter neckline of this Versace gown is what let her look down.

HIT: LIVIA FIRTH IN GARY HARVEY
OK, so Mrs Colin Firth's tulle trail does look a bit like an afterthought, but we bet she's the only one wearing Fairtrade, ecological gold (made by ethical jewellers Cred) to this year's ceremony.

HIT: MANDY MOORE IN MONIQUE LHUILLIER
Moore is proving to be quite the red carpet pro, and once again she packs a glamorous punch in this timeless Monique Lhuillier gown.

MISS: MARISA TOMEI IN CHARLES JAMES
You'd be forgiven for thinking that Tomei's new film was called 'Rising From The Ruffle'... but alas, no, that's just the impression given by her dress. However a few marks are awarded for going vintage - this Charles James dress from Lily et Cie dates back to the 1950s. Her jewels are by Van Cleef & Arpels.

HIT: MELISSA LEO IN MARC BOUWER
Leo, most often seen sporting a trouser suit on the red carpet, scored a hit in this feminine design by Marc Bouwer. Her gown hit all the right notes: not too revealing, shoulders covered, and dissimilar in style to any of the other starlets'.

MISS: PENELOPE CRUZ IN L'WREN SCOTT
Senora Cruz, what happened? We had the Oscars billed as your 'Maternity Leave Comeback'... and you pull on this cleavage-tastic gown as though merely slipping out for a munch at The Ivy. Consider yourself told - please don't let this happen again.

HIT: SANDRA BULLOCK IN VERA WANG
The best actress of 2010 positively reigned in red. This bold and structured gown marked a departure from the more 'fairytale' styles that Bullock has favoured of late. Bullock'searrings and beaceets are by Harry Winston.

HIT: SCARLETT JOHANSSON IN DOLCE & GABBANA
There was no going wrong in the colour plum tonight (see Natalie Portman in Rodarte). Johansson's been out of the red carpet spotlight lately, but her frock choices have kept us us guessing.

HIT: HILARY SWANK IN GUCCI
Swank was reading off the same sheet as Sharon Stone, tapping into the 'Black Swan' theme. However Swank kept her interpretation streamlined and elegant to compliment her enviable athletic physique.

Discover which outfits bombed and who scored stylish points on the red carpet at the Oscars 2011.

HIT: MILA KUNIS IN ELIE SAAB
The petite 'Black Swan' star could have easily eschewed such a pretty, floaty gown in favour of something more body-conscious to flaunt her to-die-for physique. So top marks are not only awarded for graceful modesty, but for choosing such a complimentary hue; lilac masterfully accentuates her honey colouring. Way to go, Kunis.

HIT: AMY ADAMS IN L'WREN SCOTT
Just how fabulous is this glittering vision of Amy Adams? The rich shade of blue provides the ultimate contrast from the red carpet, and accentuates her envious shape. 'The Fighter' star gives an astute lesson in demonstrating how a streamlined silhouette can work to knockout effect. Amy's watch and necklace are by Cartier.

HIT: GWYNETH PALTROW IN CALVIN KLEIN COLLECTION
Fresh from catching rays in the Caribbean, Paltrow positively smouldered down the red carpet in this custom-made, metallic-embroidered sheath dress by Calvin Klein Collection, teamed with earrings, brooch and ring from Louis Vuitton's 'L'Ame du Voyage' collection. Simple but devastatingly effective: that's Gwyneth all over.
MISS: NICOLE KIDMAN IN CHRISTIAN DIOR HAUTE COUTURE
This look is altogether too much: embroidery, origami-pleats, orange shoes, mis-matching choker, OTT eye-shadow... You can tell from Kidman's body language that knows she's misjudged her look tonight so was probably relieved when Natalie Portman's name was called out and this slip-up could escape the morning's front pages.

HIT: NATALIE PORTMAN IN RODARTE
Just imagining what on earth a pregnant-to-pop Portman could wear to the Oscars was giving us a massive headache, but she's defied the odds and come up trumps in this plum gown. Calling on her designer pals Laura and Kate Mulleavy of hot label Rodarte, her look is gracefully elegant, the draping working wonders to embrace and not disguise her burgeoning bump. Top marks for the Hollywood glamour hair and Tiffany rubellite tassle earrings, too. This night is definitely Portman's.

HIT: HAILEE STEINFELD IN MARCHESA
As a fairytale evening unfolded for the 14-year-old 'True Grit' nominee, her pretty Marchesa gown matched the exceptional occasion. Steinfeld reportedly co-designed the dress, and the result was not only age-appropriate but magical; the midi-length hem length safely guarded the young actress from entering 'drowning-in-a-sea-of-blancmange' territory. Steinfeld: the best dressed girl of 2011 already?

MISS: ANNE HATHAWAY IN VALENTINO
The presenter of this year's ceremony underwent numerous outfit changes during the course of the evening. While there's no denying that Hathaway's English rose complexion was invented for the colour red, this gown looks like it came with a bit too much extra 'baggage', kind of like each ruffle represents an extra 'hanger-on'.

HIT: CATE BLANCHETT IN GIVENCHY HAUTE COUTURE
It would have been a real shame if a creation from Riccardo Tisci's small but perfectly formed spring/summer haute couture collection for Givenchy didn't make an Oscar appearance, so we salute Australian actress Cate Blanchett for biting the bullet and pulling this gown off with aplomb. The only niggle is her casual coiffure ; an up-do would have done this directional gown more justice.

HIT: FLORENCE WELCH IN VALENTINO
This Valentino number looks like it was designed with vintage-loving Brit singing sensation Florence Welch in mind, making it a match made in red carpet heaven. However, can't help wishing Flo had spruced up her hair a bit more for the occasion - some old Hollywood glamour curls would have provided the icing on the tiered cake.

HIT: HALLE BERRY IN MARCHESA
A starlet can rarely go wrong in Marchesa, and Berry, prone to falling unfashionably foul on the red carpet every now and then, did well to look to the couture label. Yes, this gown is the epitome of pretty and pouffy, but with a restrained sprinkling of diamonds and that cropped hairstyle, it's total Oscars glory for Berry.

HIT: JENNIFER LAWRENCE IN CALVIN KLEIN COLLECTION
Lawrence effortlessly proves that less can indeed be more in this fuss-free red Calvin Klein gown. Armed with a toned physique and a mane of artfully bouncy hair, it's back to basics for the 'Winter's Bone' star.

HIT: MICHELLE WILLIAMS IN CHANEL
Williams more than makes up for her fashion faux pas at the Golden Globes last month ( recall the mushroom-hued, ill-fitting, daisy dress ) in this beautiful, pearl-embellished gown by Chanel. White has become the 'Blue Valentine' star's signature colour, and she looks comfortable as ever in this column design. The result? In a word, resplendent. Williams' jewels are by Harry Winston.

MISS: SHARON STONE IN CHRISTIAN DIOR
Stone was rooting for the 'Black Swam' film so much that she decided to pay homage to the evil bird in her choice of garb...

MISS: REESE WITHERSPOON IN ARMANI PRIVÉ
Oh Reese, you've played it SO safe with this choice that it looks like you're going to Dullsville, not the Academy Awards. Next....

Oscars best dressed 2011: who got it right, and who got it wrong?

There were more hits than misses on the 2011 Oscars red carpet, but who came top of the class and whose look left a lot to be desired?

 Amy Adams in L'Wren Scott
Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein Collection
Bad day for Nicole Kidman in Christian Dior
 Mila Kunis in Elie Saab

THE GOOD
BEST DRESSED: Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth positively smouldered down the red carpet in a custom-made, sparkling gold, Calvin Klein Collection sheath dress. The Country Strong actress, who sang at the ceremony, put in the hours on the Caribbean beach (and with personal trainer Tracy Anderson), to make sure this slinky number hit all the right notes.
RISING STAR: Hailee Steinfeld
Best supporting actress nominee, Hailee Steinfeld, wowed us again with another flawless red carpet choice. The 14-year-old True Grit star is already topping our best-dressed list for 2011 and it's only February. Her age-appropriate, magical Marchesa dress (which she co-designed), made her look every inch the prom queen princess.
THE SURPRISE: Amy Adams
We saw a different side to Amy Adams, who normally favours a soft silhouette and delicate colours. Her sparkling blue L'Wren Scott gown showed off every inch of her enviable frame, while its high neckline, and her elegant 1940s coiffure, kept the look on the sophisticated side of sexy.
THE LADIES CHOICE: Mila Kunis
Black Swan star Milas Kunis' petite frame and minimal use of makeup and accessories, assured that her lacy lilac Elie Saab gown didn't fall into the 'fussy' category. Extra points for not picking a more obvious sex-bomb gown that her to-die-for figure could easily flaunt.
THE INDIVIDUAL: Florence Welch
Singer Florence Welch, who performed at the ceremony, scored a hit for Valentino in a girly cream lace, tiered gown that, on many women, could look too prim. Luckily Welch's boyish frame and untamed hair leant a rock & roll edge to her vintage look.
FASHIONISTA'S FAVOURITE: Cate Blanchett
You can always rely on Cate Blanchett to make a more fashion-forward selection during award season, so it was good to see her back on the Oscars red carpet making such a successful statement. Her embellished, off-white Givenchy haute couture gown by designer Riccardo Tisci is just about the only dress from his small spring/summer collection that hasn't made a red carpet appearance since it was shown in Paris last month, making Tisci Hollywood's new go-to guy.

THE BAD
BAD BEGINNINGS: Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway made an uncharacteristic slip on the red carpet by coming as the matching curtains. The Oscars host made up for this bad start later in the evening, with a series of more successful selections, but this look is best forgotten.
STYLIST'S DAY OFF: Nicole Kidman
Kidman missed the mark in her complicated Christian Dior haute couture gown. The whole look came off as a personality crisis in motion and the usually reliable red carpet queen looked like she knew it. Small mercy then in Natalie Portman's triumph so that Nicole's look could slide under the radar of Oscars history.
BOOBY PRIZE: Penelope Cruz
Cruz is usually such a master of awards dressing so we can only assume that this booby frock - which wouldn't look out of place on a cruise cabaret singer - is the result of 'baby brain', the cruel condition which renders new mothers incapable of good judgement calls. Don't worry Penny, we know you'll be back on fighting form next season, and your cleavage definitely won you some new fans.
THE CLASH: Jennifer Hudson
Although Hudson is to be highly commended for her general transformation, her orange Atelier Versace dress was doing bad things to our retinas and her cleavage. Last time we saw her at the Oscars, her ample bosom was squeezed into the shape of a rugby ball; this time her slimmer, trimmer breasts are just too… out there.
THE BIG SNOOZE: Reese Witherspoon
Reese, your choice of gown is never going to offend anyone, but sadly it's too boring to even comment on. Must try harder.
