The four ages of beauty: 50s-plus

The best products, techniques and colours for 50-somethings and older with advice from Britain's leading skincare and make-up experts.
The make-up Make-up artist Shama Sahzayasin likes using Dior's Capture Totale range on more mature skin, such as the High Definition Serum Foundation (£62). At this age avoid shimmer, as it accentuates lines. Instead use neutral, matt blushers and eyeshadows such as Estée Lauder Silky Powder Blush in Rose Nuance (£24). If you do want a more dewy look, try a cream blush like Becca Crème Blusher in Amaryllis (£24). Add definition to the eyes by dotting a brown pencil (such as Lancôme Crayon Khol in Chataîgne Brun, £15.30) between the top and bottom lashes, and curl your lashes. Line the lips in the same colour as your lipstick, and add little gloss on top for a youthful look. Try Lipstick Queen Glossy Pencil in Genre

The regime Your skin may start to appear more thin and fragile. Switch to day and night creams containing collagen, like Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream (£76), and introduce a good serum into your routine, as well as a line-reducing eye cream with vitamin C, such as Ole Henriksen Total Truth Eye Crème (£41).

Sahzayasin recommends an alcohol-free toner, as it is less drying and can help cool skin that tends to flush.
DIY daily facial Use the three previous massage techniques in tandem to give skin a workout, says Burrell. Focus on a different area every day, repeating the regime throughout the week.
