The Browser: Cobalt

Cobalt blue is this season's must have hue. Here are six ways to wear autumn's hottest colour.

Who says workwear has to be dull? Brighten up your office wardrobe by abandoning black and grey, and embracing colour .
Metallic accents are a great way to give your transitional outfit a boost. Keep to one tone to avoid overkill.
Embrace the new season by mixing cobalt with rich jewel tones, which remain the go-to hues for autumn.
Want to expose skin without being too risquĂ©? Try mesh panels, the ultimate in reveal/conceal.
Neon accents are still huge for winter. If you don't want to go the whole hog, choose pieces with bright piping, lining or detailing for a splash of colour.
Balance a boyish, oversized coat with cropped trousers which expose the slimmest part of your leg - the ankle - for a masterclass in androgynous dressing.

Venice Film Festival 2012: stars arrive in style

... Smutniak then changed into a dazzling, beaded black dress, also by Valentino, confirming her as one to watch during the forthcoming festival.
Valentino designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli were partying with Polish actress Kasia Smutniak, who sported one of their designs.
French model Laetitia Casta opted for an elegant white Valentino sundress and coordinating heels as she docked in at the Italian island.
Casta then also changed into a black Lanvin number for the evening's cocktail party.
American actress Kate Hudson channelled her relaxed hippie vibe as she she arrived by speedboat, sporting a tribal bag and smock dress, offset by a large leather tote.
Australian actress Naomi Watts , who has been channelling the late Princess Diana for her latest film role, rocked up in a comfortable black cotton shift dress, leather sandals and a Panama hat.
Watts was later seen in an equally effortless combination of skinny jeans, suede ankle boots and cream blazer.
British actress Samantha Morton wore a gold lace corseted dress by Dolce & Gabbana to attend the soirĂ©e at the Excelsior Hotel on the island.
Elsewhere, Colin Firth , Naomi Watts , Livia Firth , wearing Dolce & Gabbana and Liev Schreiber attended an intimate party on board of the M/S Dionea.
Hosted by Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani (left), Lapo Elkann and Livia Firth , the party celebrated the opening of the prestigious Film Festival and was an opportunity to present the new issue of L'Uomo Vogue, September 2012.
Pictured alongside Sozzani is her sister Carla and Coco Brandolini D'Adda .
All eyes were on Polish actress and model, Kasia Smutniak , who is a patroness at this year's festival. The 33-year-old looked resplendent in a Valentino gown as she posed along the harbour.

Fashion trends autumn/winter 2012 and how to shop them

9. SOMETHING FANCY
Treat your wardrobe to an injection of pizazz this autumn with a flash of ornate brocade, elaborate applique, or flamboyant baroque detailing.
Clockwise from top left: Stella McCartney, Dolce & Gabbana, Christopher Kane, Marni, Carven, Dries van Noten.

8. A STATEMENT OVER-BELT
There was not a single type of garment that didn't get the over-belt treatment, from glamorous gowns to bulky overcoats. Consider this trend the wintery way to get elegantly waisted.
Clockwise from top left: Marc by Marc Jacobs, McQ, Mulberry, Burberry Prorsum.

2. SOME BAGGY LEATHER PANTS
Zero the risk of sausage leg syndrome this season by making your leather pants big and baggy.
Clockwise from top left: Proenza Schouler, Unique, Thomas Tait, Sportmax, Givenchy, Mulberry.

10. A POLO LAYER
This is one layer you'll do well not to neglect this season. Feather-light polo necks were tucked under everything from shirts and suits to coats and dresses.
Clockwise from top left: Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, Paul Smith, Dries van Noten, Alexander Wang, Pringle, Louis Vuitton.

3. SOMETHING SUPER SHINY
The chic way to 'bling' this season is not with diamante but with an injection of super-shine. Designers offered up patent leathers, PVC and rubberised rainwear to help you make a slick style statement.
Clockwise from top left: Thakoon, Jil Sander, Marni, Acne, Tommy Hilfiger, JW Anderson.

11. SOMETHING RAD IN PLAID
There's nothing so festive as a splash of plaid, but this winter take your palette of red, black, and white checks out of the log cabin and onto the street.
Clockwise from top left: Michael Kors, Rick Owens, JW Anderson, Rochas, Marni, Jonathan Saunders.

4. SOMETHING ONE PART COWBOY, ONE PART ROCKABILLY
A smattering on the catwalk, all over the high street, the cowboy/rockabilly trend is a must invest this season. Team your cropped denims with an appliquĂ©d western shirt; consider an embroidered bomber, or just say it with shoes…
Clockwise from top left: Marios Schwab, Isabel Marant, Diesel Black Gold, Isabel Marant, Antipodium, Proenza Schouler.

5. SOMETHING PSYCHEDELIC, MAN
Take a trip back to the Seventies in a psychedelic print loud enough to make your eyes boggle.
Clockwise from top left: Versus, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Marc Jacobs.

6. AN OVERSIZE OVERCOAT
When it comes to coats, big is beautiful this season. Make yours manly, double breasted and strong shouldered like those stalking the catwalk at Céline and Hermès, or envelope yourself in soft, dressing gown-esque curves a la Jil Sander and Daks.
Clockwise from top left: Chanel, Hermès, Céline, Maxmara, Daks, Jil Sander.

7. SOMETHING HIP
It's not about disguising your curves this season; it's about emphasising them. Silhouettes went big on hips with peplums, panniers and padding popping up on catwalks the world over.
Clockwise from top left: Marc Jacobs, Jil Sander, Carven, Thakoon, Stella McCartney, Lanvin.

1. A GEOMETRIC JUMPER
Chunky knit? Check. Pattern? Um, check… Be sure to make a graphic statement with your winter woolens this season.
Clockwise from top left: Unique, Kenzo, Jonathan Saunders, Proenza Schouler.

Eighties actresses then and now

 DARYL HANNAH
Although her sweeping hair may be reminiscent of her mermaid character in the 1984 hit 'Splash', Hannah's attempts to turn back time oddly reminds us more of a puffer fish...
 MELANIE GRIFFITH
Yes, this is actually the same woman... Twenty four years on from 'Working Girl', Melanie is barely recognisable after endless 'modifications' to her face.
 DEMI MOORE
Although evidently a natural beauty, you could have been forgiven for thinking that Demi Moore circa 1985 was a professional Boy George impersonator. Fast forward to 2012 and she's the hottest, fittest, raven-haired mother in town.
 KELLY MCGILLIS
'Top Gun' actress McGillis has let nature take its way and at 55, isn't ashamed to be grey and proud. The result however, means that it's hard to picture as the blonde 29-year-old who played opposite Tom Cruise.
 JOAN COLLINS
'If it ain't broke don't fix it'; well, it's sort of worked for Joan Collins. The penchant for diamonds, razzle-dazzle and pouffy hair, it's all still there, meaning if Joan doesn't want to grow old uber-gracefully, she can at least do it on her unmistakeable terms.
 SHARON STONE
Those endless legs have carried 'Basic Instinct' star Sharon Stone well into the new millennium, and recent pictures of her in a bikini only confirm she was lucky enough to inherit supermodel-esque genes.
 KELLY LE BROCK
Famous for playing a bee-stung beauty in 'Woman in Red' back in 1998, Kelly le Brock has fared fairly well, despite a touch of the scourge of Hollywood : Pillow Face Syndrome.
 LINDA GRAY
She looked like a Sixties pin-up back in the Eighties… now 'Dallas' actress Linda Grey looks every inch the fifty-something even though she's 71. That's right, 71. Whatever she's having, we definitely can't do without it.
 MEG RYAN
Two decades on from romancing viewers in the hit 1989 film 'When Harry Met Sally', Meg Ryan's style hasn't changed a bit - but hair has evolved from frizzy, carefree curls to carefully tousled waves. Might we suggest from Ryan's pillowy profile that she too was keen to hang on to her heady 80s heyday looks?
 MICHELLE PFEIFFER
Pfeiffer's trademark cat-like eyes and elfin bone structure have guided her into her fifties with grace. Having stayed true to her pale and blonde colouring, this is a woman who looks just as clssy now as she did in Scar Face back in 1983.
KIM BASINGER
What on earth is 'Nine ½ Weeks' star Kim Basinger's secret? Does she sleep in an oxygen tent; spend 23 hours a day doing yoga; embalm herself in anti-wrinkle cream? Maybe she has a portrait in the attic... Whatever her method, it's certainly worked, Basinger looks as desirable now, aged 58, as she did as a 23-year-old.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's rise to fashion fame

As Rosie Huntington-Whiteley launches her design debut for M&S, view the British model's metamorphosis from Devon beauty to global supermodel turned actress and designer.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in the Animale autumn/winter 2012 catwalk show.
And who's this? None other than Rosie's new man Jason Statham. The beautiful pair were pictured in all the coolest Los Angeles hang-outs as their relationship blossomed in early 2010.
In the summer of 2007, a very besotted-looking Tyrone Wood (son of Rolling Stones rocker Ronnie) arrived at a gallery preview in London toting a lithe, glowing piece of arm candy. The babe in question? A little-known Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, from Devon.
No... they didn't get married, but they did put on a sickeningly united front at the 2008 wedding of Tyrone's big sister Leah. Huntington-Whiteley almost upstaged the bride in this peach-hued ensemble.
A few stylish invites started landing in Rosie's letterbox. She lit up proceedings at a Louis Vuitton dinner in London.
She quickly honed a real skill for showing the fashion world just what she was made of - involving revealing but tasteful dresses, such as this draped Gucci design
At the summer event of the year - The Serpentine Gallery Summer Party in 2009, and showing a knack for mixing vintage (the dress) with high street (Topshop jacket).
And then bam! A contract to be a Victoria's Secret 'Angel' promptly followed catapulting the Devon-born beauty to global
Further lingerie-clad assignments followed, such as a job the 'face' (and body, of course) of high street retailer Monsoon's first underwear line.
Looking as glamorous as ever in a Christian Dior gown to attend the Elle Style Awards.

Venice Film Festival: what they wore on day one

Kate Hudson went for the big reveal in this cobweb creation by Atelier Versace for the premiere of her film 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist'. Her partner Matt Bellamy meanwhile, cut a dash in a suit and quirky sunglasses.
Italian actress Isabelle Adriani is also a fairytale writer, do you think her choice in partywear perhaps makes this all the more believable.

Naomi Watts chose a nude lacy gown by Marchesa and accessorised with her partner Liev Schreiber
French model and jury member Laetita Casta dazzled in this revealing, lacy beaded black dress by Dolce & Gabbana.
Polish actress Kasia Smutniak continued her stylish streak in a backless Armani PrivĂ© gown.
We loved the Opening Ceremony dress that Italian actress Daniela Virgilio wore to festival's launch dinner.
Fashion designer Olga Sorokina
Actress and singer Violante Placido coordinated the red carpet with her Alberta Ferretti gown.
 English actress Carmen Chaplin
Elle Macpherson lookalike Tiziana Rocca opted for a more-is-more approach with the fake tan as she made her big entrance at the opening ceremony dinner.
