Samantha Camerson vs Michelle Obama - 1

Two stylish political wives, but only one can win. As Michelle Obama comes to town, it's time for a First Lady fashion face-off...

 HIGH STREET HOTTIE

As well as a penchant for a high-end label, both 'First Ladies' know what purse-friendly pieces can pack a punch in a photograph. Cameron sent the British Isles dotty when her simple shift dress was actually from good old Marks & Spencer, while Michelle Obama's affection for American retailer J.Crew sent their profits soaring.
Our verdict
We simultaneously applaud their nous for 'Can you believe it's not designer' savviness.

SHAPING UP ALONGSIDE CARLA BRUNI-SARKOZY
It's every political leaders wife nightmare - what to wear when meeting the immaculate French 'First Lady', who also happens to be a statuesque former model.
Our verdict
When Michelle went head-to-head with C.B-S, she rose to the occasion in a striking, pixelated floral-print silk jacquard coat by Vanners. SamCam meanwhile, even though pregnant when it came to her fashion-face off with Carla, looked a touch too casual in a jersey T-shirt dress, and her hair was no match to Bruni-Sarkozy's blow-dried bouffant.

FASHION FORWARD
Both dedicated followers of fashion, Michelle and SamCam have championed up-and-coming names while in the limelight. Thai designer Thakoon Panichgul is one of the brightest names at New York Fashion Week, and beloved by Michelle Obama, who excelled in this vibrant, smudge-print shift.
As an ambassador for the british Fashion Council, Cameron put a stylish step forward in this galactic-print skirt by Scottish talent Christopher Kane when she hosted a fashion reception at Downing Street.
Our verdict
Hats off to both for investing in the future of fashion, but SamCam deserves extra recognition for pulling off an off-the-wall print such as this.

DOWN WITH THE KIDS
As well as political wives, Cameron and Obama have young children to run around after, meaning a reserve of jeans and comfy casuals in which to play the multi-tasking mother.
Our verdict
Michelle's low-key look is certainly never going to cause either of her daughters any cringe-worthy moments. However, top marks to SamCam for rocking a pair of Converse.

AIR STYLE
Private jets and photographers waiting for you on the runway: it's all part and parcel of being political WAG, and looking picture perfect, even after a 12-hour flight, is non-negotiable.
Our verdict
Michelle looks resplendent and epitomises spring dressing in this comfy, stripy number from the Marc by Marc Jacobs spring/summer collection. Less can be said of SamCam however, who looked like she borrowed one of husband David's jogging fleeces, for the short flight from London to Blackpool.

 ALLOTMENT CHIC

Samantha and Michelle are the type of women who don't mind getting their hands dirty, and when it comes to a spot of gardening, they love to be seen getting stuck in. Sam Cam opted for a practical, outdoorsy vibe in muted tones, while Michelle continued her love affair with colour.
Our verdict
Sam Cam's khaki Comptoir des Cotoniers jacket set just the right tone. Michelle's outfit proved just that little bit too jazzy for the cabbage patch.

CARDIGAN COVER-UP
Mrs Obama's fondness for cardigans has been well documented, inspiring women around the world to reconsider the stylish merits of said item, but Sam Cam is a pupil of the tailored jacket/ blazer school of thought.
Our verdict
While we love the surprisingly effective colour-blocking approach of Samantha's raspberry cardie teamed with a strawberry-esque blouse, we fell head over flat heels for Michelle's brilliant Junya Watanabe button-up.

THE POWER OF ASYMMETRY
Nothing screams glamour like an asymmetrical gown does, and the political wives know a carefully chosen dress provides a sartorial queue-jump for a photogenic frenzy.
Our verdict
Michelle ups the dinner-date ante in a sparkling Peter Soronen dress, complete with 'up'do', diamonds and a shimmering décolletage, yet Samantha shows how she still needs to locate her inner red-carpet goddess.
