Why British men are sartorial losers on holiday

As David Cameron showed, dressing for a jaunt in the sun is a wardrobe challenge at which the average - and even the distinguished - British gent fails miserably, says Alex Bilmes.

There is a reason why most men over the age of 25 are most comfortable in a uniform, and it is not just our innate conservatism when it comes to fashion. It is because without style diktats, we are forced to fall back on our personal taste - and that is where it all goes moobs-up.

As demonstrated by the recent uncensored holiday snaps of the Prime Minister, the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Leader of the Opposition - or Upsy Davy, Mr Blobby and Iggle Piggle, as seasoned summer style-watchers may prefer to think of them - dressing for one's annual holiday in the sun is a wardrobe challenge at which the average (and even the distinguished) British gent fails miserably. No doubt our political leaders' PR handlers are at least a little relieved that their bosses been called back early from their vacations, if only because it will avoid any further merriment over the state of their "abroad-robes".
